Our Way too Soon Predictions for F1 2026

This latest episode of **Hard Compound** feels a bit like standing on the edge of a cliff. We’ve just wrapped up the 2026 testing sessions in Barcelona and Bahrain, and if the telemetry is to be believed, we are in for the most chaotic season of the decade.

Between the new power unit regulations and the arrival of global titans like Ford and Cadillac, the grid looks less like a racing series and more like a high-stakes corporate war. Patrick and I sat down to sift through the "lies" of testing to bring you our way-too-early 2026 predictions.

The Car to Beat: Is the Silver Arrow Back?

The 2026 regulations represent a total "reset" button. Whenever this happens, we look to the teams with the deepest pockets.

* **The Consensus:** Mercedes. They are a power unit provider with everything in-house. While Patrick expects them to be dominant, he doesn't think we’ll see a repeat of the 2014 "clean sweep."

* **The Challenger:** The **Red Bull-Ford** partnership. It’s an incredible feat of engineering for Ford to be this competitive in Year One, but the rumors from the paddock suggest they are right on the heels of the Silver Arrows.

The Driver’s Championship: The Max Factor

We ran the "sim" on who takes the trophy home.

* **Patrick’s Pick:** **Max Verstappen.** It’s hard to bet against the man. Even in a 2025 Red Bull that was arguably the fourth-best car on the grid, he nearly snatched the title. If the Ford engine is even remotely competitive, Max cements his legacy as the G.O.A.T.

* **Brian’s Take:** I’m with Patrick. I don't see George (Mercedes), Lando (McLaren), or Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) having the consistency to out-grind Max over a 24-race season.

Predicted Top 5 Finishers (Constructors)

| Rank | Team | Power Unit |

| --- | --- | --- |

| **1** | Mercedes | Mercedes |

| **2** | Red Bull-Ford | Ford |

| **3** | McLaren | Mercedes |

| **4** | Ferrari | Ferrari |

| **5** | Cadillac | GM/Cadillac |

The "New Kids" and the Disappointments

For the first time in years, we have **11 teams** on the grid.

* **Audi & Cadillac:** We expect both to finish "miles ahead" of a faltering Alpine. Cadillac, in particular, has built a solid organization that looks nothing like the "hustle" of Haas’s early years.

* **The Alpine Slump:** The French team continues to fall. They look to be fighting at the very back with a struggling Aston Martin.

* **The Alonso Drama:** Speaking of Aston, Fernando looks... unhappy. Between fewer testing laps and a Honda power unit that historically takes two years to find its legs, it could be a long, salty season for the Spaniard.

The Ferrari Heartbreak: Hamilton’s Drought

It is still hard to say out loud: **Lewis Hamilton did not reach an actual race podium in 2025.** Zero wins. Zero podiums (unless you count that lone Sprint consolation prize in China).

> **Patrick’s Prediction:** "I cannot imagine Lewis Hamilton, in a competitive Ferrari, not finding his way back to the podium in 2026. He’s 40, he’s diversified his interests, but the man is still a racer."

The "Dirty Air" Predictions (The Wild Stuff)

We wrapped the show with some "bat-shit crazy" theories that might just come true:

* **The Great Retirement:** Patrick predicts that at the end of 2026, **Max, Lewis, and Alonso** will all leave the sport. They hate the new cars, they aren't having fun, and they've got nothing left to prove.

* **The Hollywood Crossover:** Expect *F1: The Movie 2* to feature a bizarre crossover with Tom Cruise’s *Days of Thunder*.

* **The American Pipeline:** Cadillac will officially announce a US-based driver development program overseen by **Juan Pablo Montoya** and **Jenson Button**.
